What we do
The following privacy notice applied to the Participation Team.
2008 Education and Skills Act (ESA 2008)
The Council's statutory responsibilities derive from the 2008 Education and Skills Act (ESA 2008). All the sections below come from that act.
Section 68 of the act requires local authorities in England to make available to young people and relevant young adults for whom it is responsible such services as it considers appropriate to encourage, enable or assist the effective participation of those persons in education or training.
It also states that when carrying out this obligation you must have regard for the statutory guidance issued by the Secretary of State for Education.
The statutory guidance says: to discharge this duty, local authorities must collect information about young people in their area in order to identify those who are not participating, or who are at risk of not doing so, and to target their resources on those who need them most.
To meet this requirement, local authorities need to have arrangements in place to confirm all young people’s current activity at regular intervals. This may be through the exchange of information with education and training providers, and other services within the local authority area such as youth offending teams and Jobcentre Plus, as well as through direct contact with young people.
