Be Active leisure discounts

If you're a student, over 60 or receiving certain benefits, you may be able to get discounts on leisure and exercise activities.

You can join if

  • you're a Lewisham resident over 16 years old and you meet at least one of the following criteria:

You get certain benefits

You're eligible if you get any of these:

  • council tax reduction

  • housing benefit

  • universal credit

  • tax credits (not child tax credits)

  • income support

  • jobseeker's allowance

  • employment and support allowance 

If so, you can get:

  • automatic casual membership at all Lewisham leisure centres

  • 25% off the cost of most activities

You have a disability

You’re eligible if:

  • you're a Blue Badge holder

  • you'e a disability Freedom Pass holder

  • you get disability living allowance, attendance allowance or personal independence payments

If so you can get:

  • automatic casual membership at all Lewisham leisure centres

  • free swimming

  • free use of the gym, including a group induction

  • free use of the athletic track

  • 25% off the cost of most activities

You're a carer

You can sign up to the Be Active scheme if you:

  • are a carer (unpaid or professional) of a disabled adult who lives in the borough

  • care for a disabled child who lives in the borough and is a library member

You're a child in care

If you're in care, for example you're in a foster home, ask your guardian to contact us to see if you are eligible.

Where to register

Register at one centre and you can use any of the others (excluding Downham Health and Leisure Centre - to use Downham Health and Leisure Centre, you must register there). 

What you'll need

  • proof of your name, address and date of birth

  • any extra documents listed below

Lewisham residents aged 16+ living in households receiving benefits

One of these:

  • a letter from us showing that you receive council tax reduction, housing benefit or universal credit

  • a letter from HMRC showing that you receive tax credits (not child tax credit)

  • a letter from DWP showing that you receive one of:
    - income support
    - jobseeker's allowance
    - employment and support allowance universal credit

Students aged 16+ in full-time education and living or studying in Lewisham

A letter from your sixth form, college or university confirming that either:

  • you are a full-time student in Lewisham or

  • you live in Lewisham but are a full-time student outside of the borough

Lewisham residents aged 16+ with a disability

Proof of your name and address, plus one of these:

  • your Blue Badge

  • your disability Freedom Pass

  • a letter proving that you get one of:
    - disability living allowance
    - attendance allowance
    - personal independence payments

Carers (professional and unpaid) of disabled adults who are Lewisham residents

Proof of your name and address, plus one of these:

  • a letter from the person you care for, nominating you

  • a letter from the care agency you work for, nominating you

The person you care for must be:

  • registered for Be Active because they have a disability

  • unable to use services without your support

Carers of disabled children who are Lewisham residents

Proof of the child's disability.

The child:

  • must have a Lewisham library card

  • does not need to be registered for Be Active

Types of membership

Casual membership

  • when you register for Be Active you automatically get casual membership
  • you can get either free access or a 25% discount off facilities
  • you must renew every 12 months (if you're getting benefits or studying in Lewisham, you must renew your membership every 6 months)
  • you must bring evidence of eligibility to renew

Unlimited membership

  • unlimited use of all activities offered for around £5 a week
  • includes the pool, gym and exercise classes
  • you can apply for unlimited membership once you're a casual member
  • £23.50 at Downham Health & Leisure Centre paid via Direct Debit
  • you must renew your membership every 3 months
  • you must give one month's notice to cancel
  • not available to carers
