Grants of up to £1000 available for Black History Lewisham 365 events

The theme for this year’s Black History Month is ‘Reclaiming Narratives,’ marking a change towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. While it’s important to acknowledge the national Black History Month campaign each October, in Lewisham, we believe in action 365 days a year.

From SEEN Lewisham to Windrush Day, the upcoming Black Leadership Event, and much more, we are committed to amplifying the diverse voices and stories of the Black community in Lewisham.

This year, grants of up to £1000 will be available for projects in Lewisham. Do you have an idea for an event or activity that tells stories from the Black community in a new way or helps people connect and share their own stories? Apply for a grant!

Last year, we had a brilliant response with events happening across the borough for people of all ages.

Coco Collective kicked off Black History Month with food-growing workshops for 8-16 year-olds and families. Activities included seed sowing, weeding, watering, planting onions, garlic, and strawberries, and harvesting callaloo and pumpkins. Participants enjoyed a garden tour, learning about heritage foods, their health benefits, and permaculture principles, followed by a chef-prepared Ital soup made on-site from the harvested produce.

60 Up CIC celebrated with a Caribbean buffet lunch, shared stories, music, an African printing workshop, and a self-care workshop. What started as a one-off event to capture members' memories and experiences became a project to gather more stories from the group called the “Windrush babies and young people.”
