Low income

Find out about Council Tax reductions if you're on a low income.
Haven't had your council tax bill?

If you've got a MyLewisham account and have registered to view your council tax account online, you won't get a paper copy of your annual bill – it'll be available to view online instead.

If you don't have MyLewisham account, you'll get a paper copy in the post as normal.

Who's eligible

You can claim a council tax reduction if you are on a low income and all of the following apply:

  • you’re liable to pay council tax
  • you have savings of less than £16,000 (unless you getting pension credit)
  • you are over 16 years of age
  • you get income support, jobseeker’s allowance (income-based) or pension credit, or you are living on a low income

Before applying, you can see if you're eligible for this discount using an online benefits entitlement checker.

If you are not eligible for the council tax reduction scheme you might still be able to apply for a discount based on other factors (for example, single occupant, student, carer, disability, etc).

How much reduction you get

If you’re a pensioner on a low income you might be eligible for a reduction of up to a maximum of 100% on the whole amount of your council tax.

If you’re of working age on a low income, you might be eligible for a reduction of up to a maximum of 75% on the whole amount of your council tax.

How do I apply?

Apply online using the buttons below. You will need to have your personal and income details ready.

We aim to process your application within 10 working days - if you've uploaded all the documents listed in the evidence checklist. If something's missing, or we need to check something, we'll contact you by phone or email.

If you’re waiting for an assessment you must continue to pay your current bill until we have assessed your claim.
