Apprentice discount

We may reduce your council tax bill by 25% if your apprenticeship meets the criteria.
Council tax Direct Debits

Weekly Direct Debit council tax payments will be collected on Monday (instead of Friday) from 7 April 2025 until the end of March 2026.

You can also pay monthly on the 1st, 18th or 28th of the month.

Haven't had your council tax bill?

If you've got a MyLewisham account and have registered to view your council tax account online, you won't get a paper copy of your annual bill – it'll be available to view online instead.

If you don't have MyLewisham account, you'll get a paper copy in the post as normal.

Who is eligible

Apprentice eligibility

An apprentice is defined as someone who is:

  • employed to learn a trade, business, profession, in office or vocational work
  • undertaking a programme of training leading to a qualification
  • earning a salary, which is less than if qualified and less than £195 per week

Youth trainee eligibility 

  • under 25 years of age, and
  • training under an individual training plan issued on a scheme run under Section 2 of the Employment Training Act 1973 or Section 2 of the Enterprise and New Town (Scotland) Act 1991.

Youth Credit, Options, Future and Next Step trainees also qualify if they meet the above definition.

How much reduction do you get

  • If you live alone, a 50% discount is awarded to your address
  • if you live with one other person, a 25% discount is awarded
  • no discount can be awarded if two or more other people are living with you

How do I apply?

You need to provide evidence in the form of a letter or certificate from your apprenticeship or traineeship provider and your latest five-weekly or two-monthly payslip.

Once you have completed the form and provided evidence we aim to process your application within 10 working days.
