YLP Youth Volunteer Programme: Young Lewisham Project
Date: December 2024 – March 2025
The Young Lewisham Project's volunteering programme supports young people aged 16-25 in Lewisham, aiming to empower them with practical skills, build confidence, and support personal growth. This project specifically benefits individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, those not in education, employment, or training (NEET), and young people facing social or employment barriers.
The YLP Youth Volunteer Programme provides opportunities for young volunteers to engage in hands-on, skill-building activities that offer an alternative to traditional education, focusing on fostering resilience, teamwork, and responsibility. These activities are designed to make practical skills accessible, improve employability, and create pathways to social inclusion. The project also helps to develop communication skills, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, and knowledge.
Key activities include:
- Mechanics and bike repair: Teaching participants how to maintain and repair bicycles and motorbikes, building technical and problem-solving skills.
- Woodworking and carpentry: Hands-on experience in creating and repairing items, from basic carpentry to advanced woodworking projects.
- Gardening and horticulture: Contributing to community gardening projects, developing skills in planting and maintenance while learning about sustainability and teamwork.
- Creative arts and crafts: Exploring creativity, building self-expression skills, and gaining confidence.
By combining skill-building with mentorship, the Young Lewisham Project provides a pathway for young people to advance personally and professionally, fostering resilience, confidence, and readiness for future opportunities.
