Tree removal
We only remove Council trees under specific circumstances and strive to plant a replacement for every tree that is removed from the borough's streets.
When trees need to be removed
A tree may be considered for removal if:
- they pose a high risk of damage or injury to people or property
- cause unacceptable obstruction of the public highway or footpath, which cannot be solved by pruning or alternate means
- are causing overpopulation
- a decision is made that the species is inappropriate for the setting
What happens after removal
As part of our commitment to sustainable tree planting, we will consider planting in vacant tree pits in the immediate area of the tree being consulted on, in the next available tree planting season.
Tree stumps
Sometimes a repair is needed to fix damage caused by the former tree. When this is the case we may schedule a tree stump removal to take place at the same time as works to the highway or footpath.
Have your say
Section 115 of the Environment Act 2021 requires local highway authorities in England to ask the public before cutting down street trees. This is called the Duty to Consult.
This Duty to Consult does not apply to all types of trees that we manage. There are a number of exemptions were we do not need to consult on a tree removal.
How to take part
If you want to comment on any proposals to remove a highway tree please email DtC_Tree_Consultation@lewisham.gov.uk.
We will review all responses and publish consultation outcomes on this page. While public feedback is welcomed, it should be noted that the decision to remove the tree is based on comprehensive technical evidence and legal obligations.
