Falls prevention
Falling is common - but help is available anyone can fall - but older people or people with health conditions can be more at risk.
Falling over isn’t just “part of getting old” - you can get help to stay safe and steady.
Why falls matter
Falling can: cause bruises, cuts, or broken bones make you feel scared or worried stop you going out or moving around lead to hospital visits but with the right support, most falls can be prevented.
Who can get help
You may need support if you:
- have fallen before or feel unsteady
- feel dizzy or black out
- are scared of falling
- use a walking stick or frame
- are 65 or older and live in Lewisham
Make your home safer check for things that could cause a fall:
- loose rugs or wires
- poor lighting
- clutter on the floor
- slippery surfaces
We may be able to help by fitting:

- better lighting
- Linkline alarm service
Help at home - equipment and safety
Keep your body strong
Staying active helps with balance and strength. You could:
- go for walks
- try chair exercises
- join a class like stable and steady (for over 65s)

Lewisham community falls service this NHS team can help if you are 65 or over and have fallen or feel at risk of falling. They will:
- check your balance and strength
- look at your medicine
- help with equipment or exercises
- visit your home if needed
- make a safety plan with you

Other things that can help
- eye checks - poor vision can lead to falls hearing tests
- foot care - wear safe shoes and see a podiatrist
- medication review - ask your pharmacist or gp
- drink water - dehydration can cause dizziness
- eat well - helps your bones and energy
- quit smoking - smoking weakens bones: get help to quit smoking
What to do if you fall
Stay calm and check for injuries don’t rush to get up use a blanket or falls box to stay warm call for help - use Linkline, your mobile, or bang on the wall.
