Deciding which primary schools to apply for

Find out how to decide which primary schools to apply for.

The deadline for applying for a primary school place to start school in September 2024 is 15 January 2024.

How many schools you can apply for

When you apply for a primary school place for your child, you can put up to six schools on the application.

Most of the schools in our borough are likely to be oversubscribed, so we strongly recommend you look at your nearest schools, including faith or non-faith schools. You should use all six preferences when applying so as not to restrict your application.

Which schools you can apply for

You can apply for schools in the borough of Lewisham or outside the borough. It is a good idea to research a range of schools, including ones closest to your home address, as not every child can be offered their first preference school.

Read about about our primary schools.

Admissions criteria

Read the admission criteria for the schools you want to apply for. Most primary schools get more applications than there are places available. If you apply for oversubscribed schools, the admission criteria for the school is used to decide which children are offered a place.

Visiting schools

Before you decide which schools to apply for, you should visit the schools to meet the staff and see the facilities and opportunities available.

Headteachers will be pleased to show you around and answer any questions. Contact the school directly to arrange a time to visit.
