Our apprenticeships

What you will learn

Apprenticeships are a mixture of on-the-job and off-the-job training. On the job, you learn key transferable skills, such as:

  • working in teams
  • problem solving
  • communication
  • using new technology

Off the job, you spend time working towards a recognised apprenticeship standard.

Apprenticeship length

Apprenticeships at Lewisham Council are 18 months. Apprenticeships can be different lengths, but they are all at least one year long. 

Who can apply for an apprenticeship

To apply for an apprenticeship with us, you must be:

  • over the age of 16 (there is no upper age limit)
  • a Lewisham resident (we will use the electoral register to check this)
  • not in full-time education

We advertise apprenticeships on our jobs site. You can find guidance on how to complete the application form below.

Shortlisting 


After the assessment, we will shortlist the applicants who meet the minimum requirements for the position. The requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship. To be considered you must answer the apprenticeship questions on the vacancy advert.

Interview 

If you meet the shortlist criteria, we will invite you to an interview. This could be a group interview, and there might be exercises to complete. You can read interview guidance below. 

Virtual interview tips

  • If you live in a shared environment, find a quiet space and put a note on the door to inform others an interview is in progress.
  • Wear a formal outfit for you video interview as you would for an in person interview.
  • Find an area with good lighting, your background should be clear with no distractions or blur your background.
  • Be on time to your interview and check the link provided works prior to your interview. Log on to the link 5 minutes earlier than your specified time.
  • Have a glass of water on standby in case you need a drink or a moment to think about a question you have been asked.
  • Have notes prepared to help provide prompts and reminders for your answers.
  • Eye contact is key, even in virtual interviews.

Benefits

Pay

We pay apprentices the London Living Wage (LLW).

Travel

If you are aged 18 and over in the first year of your apprenticeship, you can get a 30% discount on travelcards and bus and tram season tickets. Apply for your discount from Transport for London.

Support

Our tutors and staff will offer your support throughout your apprenticeship. After you have finished your apprenticeship, you’ll be in a strong position to move into permanent employment.
