Pilates for core strength including elements of bone care

Pilates is a method of exercise that uses low impact movements to promote flexibility, muscular strength and endurance. The benefits of this practice include proper postural alignment, increased core strength and improved muscle balance. This class focuses on the needs of mature adults who would like to improve their muscular strength and bone health under the supervision of an experienced tutor. Note, it is essential that you have the ability to manoeuvre your body to the floor as much of the course is mat based.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is suitable for beginners.

Learning Goals:
Become more flexible. Strengthen your muscles. Improve your mobility while focusing on bone care. Achieve a personal goal associated with your physical wellbeing.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including demonstration, progress assessments, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will gauge your progress by observing your performance, correcting your poses and offering guidance and feedback. You'll also use self assessment, discussion and feedback from your peers.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
The tutor will discuss this with you in your first session.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need a yoga mat. These are available at the centre, but you're welcome to bring your own. The tutor may indicate where you can buy equipment, but please don't purchase anything before your first session unless requested to do so. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please bring your yoga mat if you have one, and wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement.

The department offers a wide variety of wellbeing courses. Information about these is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.

Additional information
Please note that although this course is scheduled to take place in either the dance studio or the gym, these spaces may be unavailable at times, in which case sessions may be delivered online. Note, it is essential that you have the ability to manoeuvre your body to the floor as much of the course is mat based.
