Dog microchipping
Compulsory microchipping of dogs
-
It is compulsory to microchip all dogs over eight weeks old. You also must register your dog, unless it is exempt.
-
To follow the regulations you must get your dog microchipped and registered on an approved database. If you don't do this you might be served a notice.
-
If you do not get your dog microchipped and registered within 21 days of the served notice you may have to pay a £500 fine.
-
It is also an offence to transfer a dog to a new keeper before it has been microchipped, unless the dog is exempt.
Join a dog registration scheme
Joining a dog registration scheme will help you to find your pet should it ever become lost.
There are different types of registration schemes. Some involve your dog having a tag, tattoo or microchip.
Free microchipping
Microchipping is a good way to identify your pet. It increases the chances of finding your pet if it is lost or stolen.
