Information about dogs and reporting lost dogs

Find out how to report your dog being lost, report a stray, report an attack or claim your lost dog.

Report your lost dog

You can report your lost dog using our online form. We will ask you for:

  • where and when you lost the dog

  • information about the dog including the breed, if you know it.

Other organisations to contact

We also recommend you contact the following organisations:

You should also contact some of our neighbouring boroughs:

Claim your lost dog

If you are aware that we have your dog, which was lost or stolen, you can let us know you want to claim it by filling in the online form. We will need your contact details and some information about the dog.

If you are claiming a stray dog you will be charged the statutory stray dog fee of £25.00 and any additional costs incurred.  These may include a repeat offence fee, boarding costs and veterinary costs.

Report a stray dog

A dog is straying if it is unsupervised in a public place, or any private area without the owner's consent.

If you let your dog stray, you may be fined.

To report a stray dog during office hours call 020 8314 2098.

Outside of office hours call 020 8314 6000 and our switchboard operators will redirect you.

The police don't deal with stray dogs but they do deal with stolen dogs. Report a stolen dog to your local police station.

Keeping stray dogs

If you find a stray dog and want to keep it, you should tell us, your local police station and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

We will need to visit your home to check your suitability to care for the dog.

You must keep the dog for a period of one month. After that time you can give the dog away or keep it. The dog will not be legally yours, and if an owner comes forward after this period they may still have a right to claim it.

If the owner of the dog is looking for it, and has registered it missing, we will tell them that the dog has been found and contact you to discuss next steps.

Report that your dog has been attacked by another dog

If your dog has been attacked by another dog, please let us know using the form below.

We will need to know your contact details, information about the attack and where it took place.

If a dog is dangerous, out of control or has attacked a human we recommend you to call the local Police Safer Neighbourhood team.

Report a dangerous dog

If you see a dangerous dog please contact the police.
