Skip licensing and other highway occupancy

Please think carefully about the positioning of your skip. Skips must not:

• cause a lack of visibility for road users

• be sited on a corner/junction

• be sited on yellow lines

• cause obstruction to traffic and/or pedestrians

• be sited if the footway and/or carriageway is too narrow

To place a skip on the road you must hire a skip from a skip operating company registered with the borough. This company will apply for a licence on your behalf.

Companies need to give proof of public liability insurance and a copy of their standard waste transfer processes in order to get a license to provide skips in Lewisham. This information is updated annually.

If you wish to place a skip on the public highway you must use a Lewisham registered company. You must also make your own enquiries into the company to make sure it matches your requirements. This would include a check on insurance and other relevant information. We will not accept liability for any damage or financial loss resulting from the use of any of these companies.

Placing a skip in your garden or driveway

A licence is not required, nor do you have to use one of the companies from our list. However, note that should the public highway be damaged during the delivery or collection of the skip, the land owner may be liable for the costs of repairs.

If you wish to register your company to place skips on roads in the borough please email your request to businesssupporthighways@lewisham.gov.uk.

Materials licence

Required to place building materials on the public highway. This also applies to hippo bags.

£84 per month. A refundable deposit against damage to public highway may be requested.

Container licence

£239 per month (30 days) including £98 inspection fee. A refundable deposit against damage to public highway may be requested.

Container licence extension

£141 per month (30 days).

Crane licence (oversail licence)

£523 per month(30 days) including £98 inspection fee. A refundable deposit against damage to public highway may be requested.

Crane licence extension

£143 per month (30 days).

Welfare Unit

£239 per month (30 days) including £98 inspection fee. A refundable deposit against damage to public highway may be requested.

Welfare Unit licence extension

£141 per month (30 days).
