Information for applicants working with children, young people and vulnerable adults

Find out about the recruitment process for positions working with children, young people or vulnerable adults.

Our recruitment and selection procedures for all staff are designed to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults by ensuring that only suitable individuals are appointed. 

Application stage

Before applying for a job working with children, young people or vulnerable adults, you should read the following: 

  • You must provide a full employment history on your application form. This must include periods of unemployment and travelling, with dates (to the nearest month) and the names and addresses of previous employers.

  • If you have worked via an agency, then under 'employer details' you must include both your employment agency contact details and the name and address of the establishment where you were placed. We will approach both of these organisations for a reference.

  • Any applications which do not give a full employment history as requested above will not be considered.

  • We reserve the right to contact your current and previous employers to confirm your employment history and ask about disciplinary offences, including those which have expired.  

How does the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act apply? 

Posts working with children, young people and vulnerable adults are exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) 2013. This means you must state all criminal convictions and the dates you received them when you apply.

If you don't, you will be disqualified from being appointed to the post if appointed. Or if we discover that you didn't state a criminal conviction once you are already working with us, you could be dismissed immediately without notice. Find out more about the recruitment of ex-offenders.   

After a conditional job offer has been made

  • If you are successful in the selection process, you will have to undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check to identify that you are a suitable person to work with children. These checks will be renewed every three years.
  • Please be aware that someone disqualified from working with children through any of the various means available is guilty of an offence if they knowingly apply for or accept any work in a regulated position, e.g. classified as working with children. (Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000).

  • At this stage in the recruitment process we will need to confirm your identify by seeing your birth certificate / marriage or divorce certificate / passport, and we will verify your educational / professional qualifications.

  • We only offer appointments if the above checks are satisfactory; and will allow no unsupervised access to children before we have completed all checks. 

  • A probationary period of six months is standard practice for all new appointments to local government.
