What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is aimed at learners who have attended Sewing skills-part-1 (TFD0550BR), or who already have basic sewing machine skills. Please note that although all skills will be re-capped, they will not be taught entirely from scratch
Learning Goals:
To be able to use a simple pattern template to cut out your bag & lining
To use a small range of professional techniques
To use specialist tools & equipment correctly and safely
To complete your bag to a good standard
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
No additional work outside of class is required.
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring the following: basic sewing kit items ( if you have any of them) such as dressmaking pins, a tape measure, stitch ripper & fabric cutting out scissors), approximately 30-40cm of the fabric/s of your choice & lining and a reel of good quality polyester sewing thread to match your fabric. We recommend using easy to sew fabrics such as cottons or linen. Please do not purchase anything new materials-wise until you have received confirmation that the class is definitely running
What do I need to bring to the first class?
All items previously listed in the materials section & a notebook and pen and/or your phone or camera for recording ideas and techniques
Options when finished
It can be attended as a stand-alone course, but ideally learners will develop their skills & knowledge by attending the follow-on course: TFD0580BR, Clothesmaking for beginners. Information about additional or progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the current ALL programme on our website
Additional information
Please note that it is not possible to bring your own sewing machine- these are provided at the centre. There will be a scheduled 30-minute break during the course, and the course fee includes a very small charge for basic course sampling materials & sundries, and maintenance of tools & equipment
