Wired occasion designs - buttonholes & flower crown

This new short course will teach you the essential wiring & construction skills to enable you to make beautiful modern buttonholes that can be worn on a lapel or jacket for a special occasion such as a wedding or prom. Additionally, you will make a stunning and on-trend floral headdress, which could be worn for a wedding, summer party or festival. You will be sent materials recommendations closer to the start date of the course, but you will be able to make your designs in either fresh, dried or artificial materials – or combinations of these- to enable you to keep and re-wear them

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge or experience is required to enrol on this course- it is ideal for either complete beginners, or those learners who have some floristry experience and wish to practise or improve their skills

Learning Goals:
To identify a range of appropriate materials & construction techniques To learn how to correctly wire and tape materials To complete your designs To discuss alternative materials & design styles

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential, but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring your own flowers & foliage for each session, and the approximate cost will be £5-10 per week, depending on your choice of materials. You will also need a pair of strong scissors with sharp blades. You will need to bring materials to the first session of the course- and you will be contacted several days in advance to confirm what these will be.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
You will need to bring your own flower materials and scissors- as recommended by the tutor. As this is a practical class, please wear suitable clothing, including fully closed in footwear- you may also wish to wear an apron. Please bring a notebook and pen, plus a phone/camera will be useful for recording design ideas and techniques, and for photographing your work to build a portfolio, if applicable.

Options when finished
The department also offers a wide variety of courses in related areas of Floristry & Balloon Decor, and at different levels from beginners/improvers through to more advanced skills. These can help to build a skills set that can be beneficial if you are considering a career in the industry. Information about all of these courses is available through the Tutor, Curriculum Leader or the Adult Learning Lewisham online programme.

Additional information
The course fee includes a small materials charge that covers basic equipment such as florist's foam, basic containers and other sundries, in addition to a small contribution towards demonstration materials that are used in the class. The tutor will advise you of any additional specialist materials that you may need to purchase. DO PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IF YOU ENROL VERY CLOSE TO THE START OF THE COURSE : YOU NEED TO BRING FLOWER MATERIALS TO THE FIRST SESSION.
