Sustainable, beautiful & eco-aware designs

Create your own foam free arrangements for weddings, events, parties & gifts- or simply to enjoy yourself at home. These will include container based and ‘constructed’ designs, created using re-usable and eco-friendly materials such as moss & chicken wire, and using a traditional pin holder to create a stunning contemporary vase design. You will learn how to style your designs by working with the natural flow of your fresh plant materials and you will gain an understanding of the importance of the use of texture, shape and colour. The course will cover the whole process from choosing that all important container and alternative construction materials, to identifying, selecting & conditioning your plant materials, and costing & pricing your complete designs.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is equally suitable for either complete beginners, or those with some previous experience.

Learning Goals:
To select and prepare a range of fresh flower materials and florist's sundries To identify and explore a range of environmentally friendly and sustainable techniques & equipment To make a range of natural styled designs suitable for weddings & events or home use To be able to identify a range of fresh flowers & foliage by name and key characteristics

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring your own flowers & foliage for each session, in addition to some florist's materials that may not be covered by the basic fee. The approximate cost of these will be £15-20 per week, depending on your individual choice, and you may be able to reduce this cost if you can bring garden grown materials. You will also need a pair of strong scissors with sharp blades.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
You will need to bring your own flower materials and scissors to the first session of the course - and you will be contacted ( usually around 5-7 days before the start date) by email or letter to confirm what these will be. If you have not been contacted, or you enrol very close to the start date of the course, please contact the Curriculum Leader as soon as possible for a materials requirements list. As this is a practical class, please wear suitable clothing, including fully closed in footwear- you may also wish to wear an apron. Please bring a notebook and pen, plus a phone/camera will be useful for recording design ideas and techniques, and for photographing your work to build a portfolio, if applicable.

Options when finished
The department also offers a wide variety of courses in related areas of Floristry & Balloon Decor, and at different levels from beginners/improvers through to more advanced skills. These can help to build a skills set that can be beneficial if you are considering a career in the industry. Information about all of these courses is available through the Tutor, Curriculum Leader or the Adult Learning Lewisham online programme.

Additional information
The course fee includes a materials charge that covers basic materials & equipment, in addition to a small contribution towards demonstration materials that are used in the class. The tutor will advise you of any additional specialist materials that you may need to purchase. DO PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IF YOU ENROL VERY CLOSE TO THE START DAY OF THE COURSE: YOU NEED TO PURCHASE & BRING FLOWER MATERIALS TO THE FIRST SESSION.
