Art appreciation - drawing techniques

Reveal your talent with a variety of projects designed to lower stress and promote a healthy and calm mind. The emphasis on this art course is about appreciating and observing the learning progress. Every lesson you will be guided with advice and tips when working with specific skills and techniques. A focus on the enjoyment of the creative process will allow you to discover your skills and help you forget daily distractions. As you build up a collection of work you will start to feel a sense of self-accomplishment from each task. This course is a suitable for those who have attended art classes in the past and feel that they would enjoy the challenge of improving technical skills and problem-solving that naturally takes place when working on art projects. These sessions will give your brain a small workout which is designed to help you blow those daily cobwebs away. All sessions have a tutor-led safety net by differentiation of learning goals. You will be fully supported while being encouraged to see if you can learn something new each session. Learning something new each day has known benefits for a healthy brain. It will have give you power to achieve your goals and improve your self-esteem. At the end of the course you will have increased confidence when planning ideas to progress with your creative journey, have a sense of achievement and feel empowered to carry on learning.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course best suits learners with some prior knowledge and experience of art courses but beginners are very welcome. The most important thing needed for this course is enthusiasm and a desire to learn. This course will focus on gaining skills in a range of drawing techniques.There will be a pre-course assessment.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Learners should wear old clothes and bring a notebook and pen. An A4 sketchbook and A3 carrying portfolio would also be useful. When working with messy material it is useful to have your own rubber gloves.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
You should bring: a sketchbook and pen. All learners will be asked to arrive to the lesson on time so that you are able to access the course information and safety procedures.

Options when finished
There are a variety of different courses available in the Mindlift Department. Information about these courses is available in the prospectus and through your tutor and curriculum leader. You can also apply to mainstream courses and have support from Mindlift.

We expect a commitment to participate every week. This is beneficial to making progress. If you have problems accessing the course content, with your work or with other learners please speak to your tutor or contact the curriculum leader. Enrolment on the course is through interview with the Mindlift curriculum leader or department tutor. Please book an appointment.
