Cake decoration - build a sketch book or portfolio of design and make ideas

Stepping forward into industry, self-employment or further education, this course will provide you with the opportunity to build a professional portfolio of work containing finished samples and including a sketch book, notes and ideas. This cake decorating course has been designed to develop your own design skills and ideas, to push the boundaries, enabling you to be more confident at design and make, for use with your potential clients whether they be family or paying customers.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is for learners who are considering a career in cake decoration. You will need to have a passion for design, colour and 3D work. Baking skills are not essential, but some experience of drawing and cake decorating are required. Basic level English, maths and computer skills would be useful.

Learning Goals:
Develop your sketch book of design ideas, sampling some of your chosen techniques. Select a brief and design a decoration for a cake. Find a collection of images and items that inspire you. Research suppliers and sample products.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including demonstration (both group and individual), one to one tuition, group work, progress assessments, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use various methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions, and photos of projects to record your achievements in our virtual learning environment (VLE).

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
You will be expected to take full advantage of our virtual learning environment and log in before the course begins to find out what exciting projects you will need to prepare for in the coming weeks https://all.lewisham.gov.uk/ (VLE). Signing into our course moodle site will enable you to take part in course forums and various online activities provided by the tutor. Please provide digital photographs of your work by sending them to the tutor after each session or as a project has been completed.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
The basic materials for this course are included with equipment provided to enable you to fulfil the course goals whilst attending the session. Equipment is not to be removed from the premises. You will need to purchase a folder to keep your work in (sketches, notes, image references). If you are working on a personal goal you will be required to provide your own materials for this project. Please do not purchase anything before your first lesson unless requested to do so. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled/altered at short notice.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
The tutor will provide the necessary project items for the first session. Please bring an apron or overall, a notepad or digital note taking device, pen, tea towel and dish cloth. Your work cannot be left in the learning space.

Options when finished
Our access to work courses are varied and currently continue throughout the academic year. Opportunities to attend free tasters are available in every term. The department offers a wide variety of design, media, music and food courses at different levels. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.

The tutor will contact you via email before the course begins please ensure we have your correct details. Check your junk mail for any correspondence from us at least 1 day before the course start date. This is a practical class, ALL cannot be held responsible for any items including work, materials, tools etc left by the learner in our workrooms. This workspace is used for a varied course offer, please leave the space clean and tidy ensuring rubbish and personal belongings are removed. All drinks taken into the space must be kept in a re-useable lidded cup or container.
