Cake decoration - cartoon and other contemporary styles of decorating

Cartoon or comic cakes are grabbing everyone’s attention - Let’s explore this fun cake decorating trend together along with a few other contemporary styles. This new and exciting course offer is aimed at anyone with a passion for cake decorating. You will start by learning how to coat a cake properly using different mediums such as buttercream, sugar paste (fondant), ganache and royal icing. This is a good start for beginners and an excellent opportunity for experienced cake decorators to refresh skills. Your first project will be the Cartoon/Comic cake currently taking the cake decorating world by storm. These are a contemporary style of whimsical cake that are decorated to look like cartoons, they are incredibly fun to re-create. In the future weeks, we will look at ganache cakes (achieving those sharp sides), then we decorate fondant cakes. Week by week, you will develop your skill in contemporary styles of decorating understanding the principles of colour and texture to achieve that professional and smooth finish. This will include piping a variety of floral decorations to top-off your various cakes, you will be making various eye-catching toppers. The aims of this course will be to build your confidence, learn new and tried and trusted techniques and of course have fun!

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
You will need to have a passion for design, colour and 3D work. Baking skills are not essential, some experience of drawing and cake decorating is required. Please be advised that some learners who enrol will have more experience than others. A basic level English, Maths and computer skills are essential.

Learning Goals:
To understand how to get sharp edges, smooth surfaces, and clean lines. To work with various edible materials and coatings. To create and finish cakes to a high/professional standard Identify and achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including demonstration (both group and individual), one to one tuition, group work, progress assessments, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use various methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions, and photos of projects to record your achievements in our virtual learning environment (VLE).

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
You will be expected to take full advantage of our virtual learning environment and log in before the course begins to find out what exciting projects you will need to prepare for in the coming weeks https://all.lewisham.gov.uk/ (VLE). Signing into our course Moodle site will enable you to take part in course forums and various online activities provided by the tutor. Please provide digital photographs of your work by sending them to the tutor after each session or as a project has been completed

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
This will be discussed with the course tutor. Please do not purchase anything before your first lesson unless requested to do so. A list of necessary equipment and materials will be sent to each learner. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled/altered at short notice. SHOPPING LIST Ingredient/material lists are provided every week. Whilst many items/equipment are available to for you to use in the Kitchen, you must at least possess the following: - - Large Food grade rolling pins - Smoother - Rolling Mat (optional) - Piping nozzles - Food colourings (optional) - All edible items required. If you have difficulty purchasing any of the items listed please notify the tutor at least 72 hours before class commences.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
The tutor will provide the ingredients for the first lesson ONLY. Please bring a container to help with transporting your completed project, cling film, apron or overall, a notepad or digital note taking device, pen, tea towel and dish cloth.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of design, media, music and food courses at different levels. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.

The tutor will contact you via email before the course begins please ensure we have your correct details. Check your junk mail for any correspondence from us at least 1 day before the course start date. This is a practical class, ALL cannot be held responsible for any items including work, materials, tools etc left by the learner in our workrooms. This workspace is used for a varied course offer, please leave the space clean and tidy ensuring rubbish and personal belongings are removed. All drinks taken into the space must be kept in a re-useable lidded cup or container.
