Cake decoration – handbag, make-up and shoes

Have you ever wondered how cake artistes make those breath-taking realistic designer bags, shoes, and make-up? Good to look at and delicious to eat as well? Well, we can show you how! This course is aimed at beginners or improvers who wish to learn how to make novelty cakes that will keep your friends and family guessing whether the items are real or not. You will: • learn how to bake the perfect Madeira/Pound cake. • acquire the knowledge of how to carve and shape cakes. • understand the art and importance of crumb-coating and decorating cakes. • work with sugarpaste (fondant), and flower/modelling paste. • understand the principles of colour and texture to achieve that professional finish. • develop and apply our own creative skills and concepts. • work with templates, cutters, and craft tools • create leather/fabric effects, straps, handles/buckles etc. And so much more… The aim of this course is to build your confidence, increase decorative skills, learn new and tried and trusted techniques, and of course have fun!

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary, but a basic level of English, maths and computer skills would be useful.

Learning Goals:
Learn how to bake and carve cakes, and make a life-size handbag. Create and finish a cake to a professional standard. Model, mould, and structure the edible bag, make-up, and shoes. Identify and achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the class, including demonstration (both group and individual), one to one tuition, group work, progress assessments, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use various methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions, and photos of projects to record your achievements in our virtual learning environment (VLE).

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Homework exercises are set to enhance and develop techniques learnt during the session. Please complete the ‘Get to know you’ section of the Individual Learning Plan. You will receive this by email before the course starts and will update it regularly during the course, with support from your tutor. You will be expected to take full advantage of our virtual learning environments. Log in before the course begins to find out what exciting projects you will need to prepare for in the coming weeks https://all.lewisham.gov.uk/ (VLE). Signing into our course moodle site will enable you to take part in course forums and various online activities provided by the tutor. Please send digital photos of your work to the tutor after each session or as you complete a project.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Learners are expected to bring their own ingredients. Please don't buy anything until you have confirmation that the course will go ahead. You'll receive an email listing all the equipment and materials you'll need, but this will include a large and small food grade rolling pin and an edible shoe kit or polystyrene shoe drying stand. Optional items include food colourings and a rolling mat. If you have difficulty purchasing any of the items, please notify the tutor at least 72 hours before the class. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please bring a box container, a cake drum (thick card) and cling film to help you transport your completed project. You'll also need an apron or overall, a notepad and pen or digital note taking device, a tea towel and a dish cloth.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of design, media, music and food courses at different levels. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.

Please leave the space clean and tidy. Any drinks taken into this space must be kept in a reusable lidded cup or bottle.
