Pottery – clays, oxides and glazing – introduction

In this introduction to glazing, which takes place over four mornings, you will produce a ceramic grid of common pottery materials so you can experience the qualities of basic ceramic materials and their effect on glazes. You will perform clay shrinkage tests to understand the effect of drying and firing on different clays, learn about the materials needed to make a glaze and understand the use of glaze recipes. You will mix a glaze from a recipe and perform a “line blend” to make and test coloured glazes. Finally, you will glaze a small object using a glaze of your own creation.
