Drawing and painting – learn to draw on location – online and on location

This course is a mixture of online and in person teaching. 08/07/2025 10-12 online (focus on perspective drawing/painting techniques in the work of various artists including Anselm Kiefer) 15/07/2025 10-15:30 on location (meeting at Charing Cross station, drawing Trafalgar Square & Buckingham Palace, and with a chance to visit the Anselm Kiefer exhibition at White Cube Masons Yard) With help from our experienced tutor, you'll learn to paint and draw on location using a range of drawing and painting techniques for capturing natural and urban subjects.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge or experience is required to enrol on this course.

Learning Goals:
Learn the basic techniques for painting and drawing on location. Develop your ability to observe and represent using various media. Explore texture and mixed media using various materials. Identify and achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods, including demonstration (both group and individual), one to one tuition, group work, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, evaluation of work samples and question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
The tutor will discuss this with you in your first session.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need internet access and some basic drawing and painting materials to complete this course. Further information including a list of suggested materials will be emailed two weeks before the start date. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
You will need internet access for the first online session. This is a practical subject, so please wear clothing that's suitable for drawing and painting and for the weather conditions.
