Black History Month in Lewisham kicks off with a showstopping performance from IRIE! Dance Theatre

Black History Month 2024 launched in style last night at Broadway Theatre, Catford, with a powerful performance from IRIE! Dance Theatre’s production of Groundation: Dancing from the Archive. This stunning event marked the beginning of Lewisham’s Black History Month programme of celebrations, bringing together community leaders, distinguished guests, and performers in a night dedicated to honouring Black heritage and creativity.

While Black History Month is nationally observed in October, Lewisham’s Black History Lewisham 365 (BHL:365) initiative extends its efforts year-round. The programme offers platforms for Black voices and creates space for Black lived experiences, spanning a variety of sectors from the arts, healthcare to education and entrepreneurship.

The launch event, hosted in the Broadway Theatre, welcomed special guests, including Her Excellency Mrs Patrice Laird-Grant, Deputy High Commissioner of Jamaica, and Councillor Brenda Dacres, Mayor of Lewisham. The occasion officially kicked off a month-long series of events for Black History Month, featuring a diverse range of activities that highlight Black culture, history, and contributions to Lewisham’s vibrant community.

IRIE! Dance Theatre’s Groundation: Dancing from the Archive set the tone for this year’s celebrations. Combining traditional West African and Caribbean folk dances with live drumming, the performance offered a vivid exploration of the resilience, heritage, and spirit of the African diaspora. The production served as both a reflection of the past and a celebration of the present, representing the heart of Black cultural expression and artistic innovation.

Brenda Dacres, Mayor of Lewisham said:

"We celebrate not only Black History Month but the deep cultural impact that Black communities have made and continue to make across Lewisham. This year's theme, 'Reclaiming Narratives,' marks an important shift towards recognising and correcting the stories of Black history and culture. Through this theme, we are committed to shining a light on the untold successes, contributions, and achievements of Black people.

BHL:365 is our commitment to honouring and amplifying Black voices and experiences all year round, not just in October. Through this initiative, we will continue to support community organisations, artists, and individuals who are working tirelessly to ensure Black stories are heard, valued, and celebrated."

Councillor Edison Huynh, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities said:

"It has been an outstanding year for BHL:365, with events like SEEN Lewisham, Windrush Day, and the Black Leadership Event all amplifying the diverse voices and stories of the Black community in Lewisham. We are committed to working with local organisations to ensure everyone feels included and can actively engage with the rich cultural landscape we offer.

While Black History Month is a key highlight, our work continues year-round to celebrate and uplift the contributions that shape the identity of our borough. I'm excited for this October's events, which will build on everything we've achieved throughout the year."

The event was part of Lewisham’s ongoing commitment to amplifying the voices of global majority artists, a dedication that was further reinforced through this year’s SEEN Lewisham festival. IRIE! Dance Theatre’s long-standing presence in the borough reflects this support, with their production continuing to shape and share stories from the African and Caribbean diaspora.

As part of BHL365, community organisations have also received grants of up to £1000 to host events across the borough, ensuring ongoing support and celebration of Black culture.

Upcoming Events

A variety of activities, workshops, and performances are planned throughout the month. Highlights include dance classes by IRIE! Dance Theatre, creative writing workshops, and the Black Led Business Forum. In addition, libraries across Lewisham will host events such as Quilt Club at Downham Library, Cyanotype Photography sessions, and the Lewisham Multicultural Writers' Group.
