Lewisham and partners highlight the Bakerloo line upgrade and extension as key to unlocking new homes, jobs and economic opportunities to our borough, London and the entire country.

Mayor of Lewisham Brenda Dacres took our Back the Bakerloo campaign to a meeting of government and business leaders and set out the case for extending the line to New Cross Gate, Catford, Lewisham and beyond, as well as the importance of securing funding to upgrade the existing line.

The Bakerloo Line is an iconic part of the London Underground, and a vital part of London’s economic infrastructure. However, it is in urgent need of an upgrade and is currently at risk of critical failure or shutdown at any time.

The project would benefit not just south Londoners but the whole of the UK, unlocking over 107,000 new homes, and 150,000 new jobs nationally and give a £1.5 billion boost to the national economy.

Additionally, it would create 150,000 additional public transport trips, making it faster, greener and more efficient to get around.

Upgrading and extending the Bakerloo line has overwhelming support, and is backed by the Mayor of London, TfL, London Councils, and London’s business community - and is the most popular project TfL have ever consulted on.

We are working with partners from other councils and Transport for London to secure support and lobby the government to get this important project moving.

At the same time, we are looking to further build our campaign’s support, so please join the thousands who have already Backed the Bakerloo by signing up to the BackTheBakerloo.org.uk website.

“Extending and upgrading the Bakerloo Line is crucial for the future of London as it will unlock more than 100,000 new homes and jobs and inject a £1.5bn boost to our national economy. This is a national, transformative, growth project that has outstanding potential for not just Lewisham and south Londoners but the whole of the UK.”
