Long-term medical conditions

Long-term medical conditions include epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, mental health issues, heart problems, high blood pressure, obesity or any other condition.

Because pregnancy puts a strain on your body, how healthy you are before you get pregnant can affect how well you will be during your pregnancy. Your health can also have an impact on your baby’s wellbeing.

Some health conditions need careful management during pregnancy to make sure you and your baby have the best possible start with the minimum of risk.

It is important you talk to your doctor or specialist, ideally before you conceive or as soon as you become pregnant. Together you can then develop a plan specifically for your needs.

If you are taking medication remember don’t stop taking it without consulting your doctor.

Your doctor can also advise you of any specialist services for pregnant women with your particular condition.
