Town Centre Small Grants Fund

Find out about how you can apply for a grant to deliver an activity or event that will help safely attract people to any of the borough’s town centres and high streets.


What is it? 

The Town Centre Small Grants Fund can cover the cost of all, or part of, any activity, event, marketing and promotion of events, that will safely attract people to any of the borough's town centres and high streets. 

This may include promotional websites, markets and festivities, parades and outdoor performances, pop-up exhibitions, marketing and promotion of existing events or activities. 

This is part of Lewisham Council's plans to support local businesses and town centres in their recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19. This programme is being funded by the Welcome Back Fund (European Regional Development Fund money which has been provided by the Government to local authorities). 

How much can you apply for? 

You can apply to the Town Centre Small Grants Fund for up to £2,499 to support activities and events that will welcome people back to the high streets within the borough, boost footfall and support local businesses. 

Applications may be awarded above the maximum award on a discretionary basis. This is the decision of the council and will be decided on an individual basis. 

Who can apply? 

  • Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations
  • Registered charities
  • Trader groups
  • Arts or cultural organisations
  • Business networks
  • Individual businesses that can demonstrate they have engaged with others who will benefit from the project
  • Education providers. 

Requirements of the funding 

  • You can only make one application per activity or event.

  • If your project requires any additional licencing or permissions, it is your responsibility to obtain these. The council can support by signposting to the relevant team if required.

  • You will need to acknowledge funding has been provided by the Welcome Back Fund during your event or activity and display the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), HM Government and Lewisham Council logos and wording.

  • Events and activities must be free to attend.

  • Separate businesses or organisations cannot apply for different aspects of the same event.

  • All activities or events must be delivered by March 2022

  • On completion of the project or activity, you will be required to submit a short form detailing the project outcomes and provide supporting evidence such as photographs, videos or marketing material.

  • The project or activity must provide additionality. This can include using the funding to test different ideas and activities however the fund cannot be used to deliver anything that is already planned to be delivered.

  • For any projects planned to take place between January – March 2022, we may look to link them with the Borough of Culture (BoC) 2022 programme and ask you to use the BoC logo. We will determine this on a case by case basis where appropriate.

  • Blackheath
  • Lee
  • Brockley
  • Honor Oak
  • Forest Hill
  • Bellingham
  • Hither Green


For projects to be delivered between Jan - March 2022, applications must be submitted by 12 noon on 10th January 2022.

After you apply

We'll assess your application based on how your event or activity animates the town centre, attracts footfall and supports local businesses. We will look to achieve a geographic spread of projects across the borough.

Your application will be assessed by a panel and you will be notified of the outcome by 21st January. 

All decisions are final and we will not be able to give detailed feedback on unsuccessful applications. There will be no process for appealing against our decisions.


Organisations who are already registered as a supplier to the council will be issued with a purchase order number which will need to be quoted on the invoice when submitted for payment. Successful organisations who are not already registered will be required to do so which involves providing information about the ownership of organisation and providing bank details. 

On completion of the project or activity, you will be required to submit a short form detailing the project outcomes, along with any evidence of the project such as photographs, videos or marketing material used.
