Swimming for people with disabilities
And if you hold a valid library card, are disabled and receive disability benefit you are entitled to swim for free in all of our pools.
You can also apply to the Be Active Scheme which entitles you to a range of benefits in leisure centres and parks.
If you care for a person with disabilities you can also apply to the Be Active Scheme. This will give you a range of benefits in many of our facilities when you are accompanying the person you care for.
Disability swimming sessions
There are dedicated disability swimming sessions at many of our pools. For more information about the times and days these sessions run, contact the centre nearest to you.
Join a disability swimming club
There are two disability swimming clubs in the borough:
The Tiger Sharks at Saxon Crown SC provide swimming lessons from beginners up to competitive swimmers of all ages. Teaching staff are fully qualified to cater for any disability.
During school term time, there are three sessions per week of one hour each. Teaching is either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis.
Hydrotherapy swimming pools
There are three hydrotherapy swimming pools in the borough. They are open for public use or for use by disability groups.
University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) hydrotherapy pool
UHL hydrotherapy pool is open to the public. This is the only physiotherapy service in the borough that offers hydrotherapy. The pool can be a very effective treatment and rehabilitation for acute and chronic injuries
All staff are fully trained and the programmes are supervised by clinicians.
