Drum rhythms of the world - summer

Learners will learn about: different styles of music from various cultures around the world, instruments used around the world, the cultures from which the music comes. Also use a variety of instruments, make your own music based on improvising and engage in writing song lyrics, learn songs from different cultures and do movement and dancing activities. There will be opportunities for improving communication through some discussion. Play improvised short pieces of music in different styles. Write lyrics and sing songs composed by the class group.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
An interest in music and have chosen the course yourself. Good communication skills, the ability to concentrate throughout the class.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To study in more depth music of two countries and to play a selection of instruments from different cultures. To play improvised music within a group and dance & sing as you move. To contribute to group singing of class songs and to learn songs and present work based upon the music of other cultures at an end of year performance. To create portfolio of evidence for course.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Demonstration, verbal instructions, self-discovery through task setting. Question and Answer.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Observation, verbal feedback, student self-assessment, peer group interaction, completion of ILPs, practical group activities and work sheets. Photos and video.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
There is no work required outside the class time. However research and interest in your course subject in your own time between classes is beneficial to making progress.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Please wear loose clothing and bring a bottle of water and an A4 folder

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please bring a pen, paper and A4 Folder.

Additional information
We expect a commitment to attend well. This is beneficial to making progress. If you have problems in class with your work or with other learners please speak to your tutor or contact the Curriculum Leader. All courses are planned to be delivered in the learning centres. Class sizes have been reduced to help with social distancing. If new lock down measures are put in place class sizes will be reduced to 4, 6 depending on the room size. If more than 4 are enrolled, classes will be divided into two groups to attend alternate weeks, with access to course via ALL Moodle & handouts. .
