Food for mood - Monday - cool summer dishes

This course will include learning how to shop for useful ingredients for your kitchen cupboard, and how to cook healthy and tasty dishes. A wide and varied range of savoury and sweet dishes will be taught, including a range of preparation skills. Nutrition and food hygiene will be an important part of the course. Ideal for people who live independently. Independent preparation of dishes and planning of shopping lists will be supported on this course. Also reviewing preparation techniques and designing your own recipes.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge is needed for this course except enthusiasm and a desire to learn. Enrolment on the course is through interview with the Mindlift Curriculum leader. Please book an appointment.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
Practise and promote health and safety when using kitchen equipment Learn to follow good, safe food preparation skills and basic hygiene while cooking To have fun exploring spring and summer fruit and vegetables for light, colourful lunches, snacks and treats at low lost To build confidence through becoming more creative with cooking

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Practical demonstrations with verbal explanations, practical cooking in class for the learners, visual aids Smart screen, displays, internet, colour coding, individual help, easy to follow recipe sheets, questions and answer, prompting, reinforcement exercises, group activities: quiz, question and answer.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
There is no formal assessment, but there will be regular feedback from the tutor and weekly review of the learners' progress and regular goal setting on individual learning plans.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
To organise yourself and shop for ingredients each week. The skills learnt in class should be practised at home. There will be a work-sheet to complete for homework every week.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Cost of ingredients each week. You might need to purchase tins or containers, but these will be useful in your own home. A plastic container will be needed to transport your creations home safely.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
A4 file, a pen and paper.

Options when finished
There are a variety of different courses available in the Mindlift Department. Information about these courses is available in the prospectus and through your Tutor and Curriculum Leader. You can also apply to mainstream courses and have support from Mindlift.

Additional information
We expect a commitment to attend well. This is beneficial to making progress. If you have problems in class with your work or with other learners please speak to your tutor or contact the Curriculum Leader. All courses are planned to be delivered in the learning centres. Class sizes have been reduced to help with social distancing. If new lock down measures are put in place class sizes will be reduced to 4, 6 depending on the room size. If more than 4 are enrolled, classes will be divided into two groups to attend alternate weeks, with access to course via ALL Moodle & handouts.
