Twilight Yoga 75 - Hatha yoga - beginners and returners

Increase your body awareness, improve your posture and learn how to relax in this 10-week yoga class for beginners and improvers based on the teaching of Hatha yoga. As well as developing your strength, flexibility and stamina, you'll focus on your body alignment and learn to breathe more easily, helping you shake off the stresses of daily life. Over the weeks you'll learn a variety of yoga postures (or asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and relaxation exercises. The course includes standing, sitting, supine, prone and upside down (inverted) postures, as well as forward and backward bends, twists, side stretches and balancing poses. Attending a weekly yoga class can improve your general health and wellbeing, leaving you feeling refreshed, relaxed and full of energy.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge or experience of yoga is required to enrol on this course.

Learning Goals:
Perform a minimum of three standing poses and one balancing pose, and learn their Sanskrit names. Perform a sitting pose, a twist and an inversion. Perform a forward bend and a back bend including breathing techniques. Relaxation for 10 minutes - achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
You're not required to do extra work between sessions, but a home practice may help you progress. Your tutor will discuss this with you in your first class.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Yoga mats are available at the centre, but you're welcome to bring your own. The tutor may indicate where you can buy equipment, but please don't purchase anything before your first session unless requested to do so. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement, and don't eat for at least an hour before your session. Yoga is always practised in bare feet.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of wellbeing courses. Information about these is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.

Additional information
The tutor will ask you to complete a health questionnaire during your first class. This will help them assess your ability level and adapt their teaching to your needs. Please note that although the course is scheduled to take place in the dance studio or gym, these spaces may be unavailable at times, in which case sessions may be delivered online.
