What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
Learners must be able to perform the simplified short form unaided to enrol in this class. This skill is taught in the beginners' class. If you have not completed intermediate one and want to start with intermediate two, please contact the curriculum leader or the tutor to discuss your suitability before enrolling.
Learning Goals:
Develop Wu/Hao Style Taijiquan with some elements of Xing Yi Quan for experienced practitioners.
Learn and practise the Wu Short Form, with the possibility of moving on to the Long Form, Staff Form and Sword Form.
Study and practise Pushing Hands.
Achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including observation, discussion and question and answer sessions. After demonstrating the postures, the tutor will take you through the movements step by step. You will gradually build the form by revising the movements you've already learned before adding the next step.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of your practice and question and answer sessions.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
The tutor will discuss this with you in your first session.
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Most of the equipment for our wellbeing classes is provided, including yoga mats, but learners are welcome to bring their own. Please do not purchase anything before your first session unless requested to do so. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.
What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement, and bring a towel and a water bottle.
Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of wellbeing courses. Information about these is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.
Additional information
The tutor will ask you to complete a health questionnaire during your first class. This will help them assess your ability level and adapt their teaching to your needs. Please note that although the course is scheduled to take place in the dance studio or gym, these spaces may be unavailable at times, in which case sessions may be delivered online.
