Tai Chi Chuan – part three beginners (summer) – Thursday

Learn the art of Tai Chi in this three-part course for beginners. Tai Chi is known as an internal or soft martial art, but this course will focus on its health benefits. There are five styles of Tai Chi – Chen, Yang, Woo, Wu/Hao and Sun styles. This course will teach you the Yang style simplified short form, sometimes referred to as the 24 Step Routine. It's the most practised Tai Chi form in the world and an ideal starting point. The course runs for 30 weeks and is split into three parts, one in each term. Each class begins with a warm up and stretches followed by the Ba Duan Jin, or Eight Pieces of Brocade sequence, where each procedure stimulates a particular organ or function within the body. We then practise Qigong, coordinating breathing and movement and bringing our attention to various parts of the body to increase energy flow. When learning the short form, we'll start by focusing on footwork, then coordinate this with upper body movements, gradually building a sequence that lasts for four minutes. The aim of this course is to enable you to practise the short form and the Qigong routines on your own.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This is part three of the beginners' course. If you have not completed parts one and two and want to start with part three, please contact the curriculum leader or the tutor to discuss your suitability before enrolling.

Learning Goals:
Learn about the simplified short form 'Yang style'. Improve your basic Qigong routine from Tai Chi Chuan. Gain the confidence to practise routines independently. Achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including observation, discussion and question and answer sessions. After demonstrating the postures, the tutor will take you through the movements step by step. You will gradually build the form by revising the movements you've already learned before adding the next step.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of your practice and question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
The tutor will discuss this with you in your first session.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Most of the equipment for our wellbeing classes is provided, including yoga mats, but learners are welcome to bring their own. Please do not purchase anything before your first session unless requested to do so. No liability can be accepted for expenses incurred for a course cancelled or altered at short notice.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement, and bring a towel and a water bottle.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of wellbeing courses. Information about these is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.

Additional information
The tutor will ask you to complete a health questionnaire during your first class. This will help them assess your ability level and adapt their teaching to your needs. Please note that although the course is scheduled to take place in the dance studio or gym, these spaces may be unavailable at times, in which case sessions may be delivered online.
