Baking together, fruit cake nice and simple

Bake together and celebrate with cake. Have you had issues when trying to achieve that perfect bake? Are you nervous when it comes to simple decorating? Well fear no longer, we are here to alleviate your cake-related worries. This four-hour fruit cake baking course offers a relaxed and enjoyable way to learn the essentials of making a classic cake from scratch. It starts with a friendly introduction to the ingredients and tools, focusing on a method that keeps things simple and accessible. While the cake bakes, you will explore baking tips and take part in group discussion on how to avoid common mistakes. Once cooled, the cake is decorated with easy touches like a glaze or a dusting of sugar. The course will end with a tasting session and ideas for personalizing the recipe, making it a satisfying and approachable experience for anyone interested in home baking. What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary to enrol on this course. Please be advised that some learners who enrol will have more experience than others. A basic level of English, Maths and computer skills would be useful.

Learning Goals:
To develop your cake baking skills. To bake a cake. To learn the history and traditions of cake baking and presentation. To identify and achieve a personal goal, as discussed with your tutor.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion/question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan (eILP) which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions, photographs of projects to record achievement presented on our virtual learning environment (VLE).

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
You will be encouraged to access our virtual learning environment all.lewisham.gov.uk (VLE), take part in course forums and various online activities provided by the tutor.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Learners will be expected to purchase the ingredients before the lesson. Ingredients: 1 kilogram mixed dried fruit 300 grams self-raising flour 3 large eggs 150 grams brown sugar 150 grams butter (softened) 1 teaspoon mixed spice or cinnamon (optional)

What do I need to bring to the first class?
The ingredients list required will be sent out to you a week before the course. Read the list and instructions carefully as some preparation maybe required. Please bring a container, cling film, apron or overall, a notepad and pen, tea towel and dish cloth.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of Design, Media, Music and Food courses at different levels. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the ALL programme.

Additional information
The tutor will contact you via email before the course begins please ensure we have your correct details. This learning space is used for a varied course offer, please leave the space clean and tidy, ensuring rubbish and personal belongings are removed. All drinks taken into this space must be kept in a re-usable lidded cup or drink bottle.
