Black History Lewisham 365

Find out about our year-round commitment to supporting Lewisham's Black communities through our Black History Lewisham 365 programme.

What is Black History Lewisham 365?

While it’s important we acknowledge the national Black History Month campaign each October, in Lewisham we believe in action 365 days a year. We were proud to champion Black creators and trailblazers as part of our We Are Lewisham programme.

We are also driving conversations to help us better understand how we can support our Black communities - from tackling healthcare inequalities, to addressing disparities among our high street businesses, to eliminating inequalities in education. And that’s just the start.

Black History Month 2024

Black History Lewisham 365 is our commitment to offering a platform for Black voices and understanding Black lived experiences 365 days per year. This year, we launched the Black History Lewisham 365 (BHL:365) Trailblazer Map. This resource highlights significant Black individuals and locations important to Black culture in the borough, showcasing their contributions to politics, arts, health, and more, and celebrating the impact of the Black community on Lewisham’s history. You will find iconic people and places marked out on the map from Downham to Deptford, Telegraph Hill to Grove Park!

We have awarded grants of up to £1000 for community organisations to run events across Lewisham.

Join us in celebrating Black History Month with a special event featuring a screening of the inspiring documentary Cymande, featuring a live steel pan performance and an exclusive director’s talk.

Cymande is a powerful documentary that explores the legendary British funk band that revolutionised music in the 1970s. The film tells the story of Cymande’s groundbreaking fusion of funk, jazz, reggae, and African music, which remains a vital cultural touchstone to this day.

The evening will also include a live steel pan performance by Heart of Steal, paying homage to the Caribbean rhythms and Afrocentric sounds that influenced Cymande’s iconic style, setting the stage for a wholehearted celebration of Black music and culture.

Stick around after the screening for a West Indian rum punch and an insightful conversation with the film’s director, Tim Mackenzie-Smith, as he discusses the making of the documentary, Cymande’s enduring musical legacy, and their profound influence on Black British culture and beyond.
