Statement from the Mayor of Lewisham on the New Zealand terrorist attack

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said he was shocked and saddened at the terrible events in two mosques in Christchurch.

On visiting the Lewisham Islamic Centre in Lewisham, the Mayor said: “It is heart breaking that innocent people have been murdered because of their faith. This terrorist incident shows how important it is that we all work together for a world free from hate.

“I want all Muslims here in Lewisham and across the world to know that I stand with you today to condemn this senseless and violent attack.

“In Lewisham we are proud to stand together as one community against all forms of hate and violence. We celebrate the diversity that brings us together. We believe Lewisham is a place where diversity is a strength and is celebrated.

“While some may seek to create divisions in society and among faith groups, I say proudly that there is no place for the intolerance and hatred we have seen today in New Zealand.

“I stand with you today, and always, in peace.”

The Mayor has also written to the New Zealand High Commissioner and to Lewisham’s local mosques offering condolences on behalf of the borough.
