Adult learners exam success celebrated at special awards evening
This year’s GCSE grades were higher than the national average for comparable institutions. 61% of learners who took a maths GCSE scored grade 4 or above, nationally the figure was 35%.
46% of learners who took an English GCSE, scored grade 4 or above, nationally the figure was 37%. The ESOL department also celebrated fantastic results this year with 89% of ESOL learners achieving level 2 qualifications.
Adult learners return to education for many different reasons. To improve their skills for work or further education, gain confidence and improve their everyday life skills. Many arrive to a course unsure of their chances of success, perhaps because they struggled at school, or because it has been many years since they last took on formal learning.
Cllr Kim Powell, Cabinet Member for Business, Jobs, and Skills, said: ‘I would like to congratulate learners and their tutors on another year of fantastic results. Learners should feel very proud of their achievements.
It was a pleasure to listen to learners share their inspirational stories, and to hear how our adult learning service creates a supportive learning environment where learners thrive. This year’s grades are not only testament to the dedication of the learners but also to the high-quality teaching that the service provides’.
Luciane passed her ESOL level 2 Speaking and Listening and Writing exams this year which has led her to a fulfilling role as an early year’s assistant in a nursery. She now shares her skills and gives back to her community by running English conversation groups at her local library.
Charlotte gained her maths GCSE this year, she said: ‘after 33 years of thinking I was totally useless at maths, I am now pleased to be able to update that negative narrative about myself’.
Muna is aspiring to become a primary school teacher. She passed both her maths and English GCSE’s this year which has opened the door to her starting teacher training next year. She said: ‘Adult Learning Lewisham is a fantastic place to learn as well as socialise and meet new people’.
Tareq passed all three ESOL level 2 exams this year demonstrating his dedication to personal and professional development. Alongside his studies, Tareq works as a support worker, assisting one of the visually impaired learners making him a valued member of our learning community.
