World Homelessness Day is on Sunday 10 October

This Sunday, people around the world will join together to shine a light on homelessness and look at the many ways in which we can change the lives of homeless people within our local communities.

Tackling homelessness in Lewisham remains a key priority and we are committed to delivering a new generation of genuinely affordable homes across the borough in order to combat the housing crisis.

Cllr Paul Bell, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, said:

“Any decent society should be able to provide secure housing for all. High rents and the chronic lack of affordable housing illustrate how our economy and political system work against the interests of the most vulnerable. I’m proud that this administration is delivering new social homes through our Building for Lewisham programme, but we need to do more. This World Homeless Day, let us recommit ourselves to fighting against the policy of austerity that has led to a dramatic increase in rough sleeping over the last decade, and continue to work towards tackling homelessness.”

We have also been busy fundraising for the Mayor of Lewisham’s charity – the 999 Club. Based in Deptford, the 999 Club is a small homelessness charity. Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, was one of a team of runners that raised over £5,000 by completing the London Marathon. While last month, Lewisham’s community enjoyed a night of Drag Bingo at Catford’s Ninth Life where local attendees generously donated to the charity.

The 999 club’s services include the Gateway Day Centre where homeless people can shower, have a meal, do laundry, access support services like healthcare, or get help with job searches and housing applications. It relies on the generosity of the local community to continue its work.

This World Homelessness Day, we ask you to consider donating to the 999 Club so that it can continue its work in the borough to support those facing homelessness.

Find more information and make a donation on the 999 Club website.
