Meet the Apprentice: An interview with Lewisham Council Business Engagement Apprentice, Saffron Burton

We caught up with Saffron Burton, a Lewisham Council Business Engagement Apprentice to find out more about the Lewisham Apprenticeship Programme.

Why did you choose to apply for a Lewisham apprenticeship?

I wanted to start an apprenticeship and wasn’t hearing much back from other employers, so my mum suggested applying with the council. She said they would have a range of Saffron Burton apprenticeships available with them and others. Lewisham Apprenticeships all pay at least the London Living Wage which was another good thing.

What was the application process like?

Pretty simple, you just have to complete an online form. I had experience as a nursery assistant which helped. Lewisham called me after I had submitted the form to check I was still keen.

Watching videos online helped me prepare for my interview. I felt anxious going into Laurence House but the interview panel were reassuring. It went well and I heard back in good time.

What does your role involve and what do you enjoy about it?

I work in business engagement. I create case studies of businesses, look after social media for the team and create website content. As an example I set up social media channels and an event page for the recent tri-borough London Living Wage Week event.

I enjoy the sense of fulfilment you get from working to improve the local community, helping businesses access things, and improving the quality of our service as a result of feedback.

What is it like to start a role during this time?

It’s a bit weird to be honest, especially digitally integrating into a team! Working from home, getting to know your colleagues via virtual meetings, checking in with each other by call or video, and sharing information via email more often. I’m pleased that my manager encourages me to talk to him when I need to and makes himself accessible to do so. I’m proud of myself that I’m managing to make it work.

What have you achieved so far? And what are your future plans?

I’ve learnt a lot such as working on the London Living Wage Week mini campaign, working from home and successfully completing a spreadsheets course too.
The highlight was interviewing for a new apprentice position via video conferencing. It was certainly good to see things from the other side of the process. We successfully appointed a candidate too.

For now I want to complete my apprenticeship and the qualification to keep developing my skills and achieve all I can in my role. Longer term I’d like to work in a hospital and maybe become a mid-wife.

What advice would you give to other residents who are thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

I think it is as good a choice as going to university. An apprenticeship is a solid option and as an entry level position everyone is considered. You gain experience and get the chance to learn new skills whilst earning a good wage. The apprenticeship qualification is recognised by employers as well, so hopefully when you finish a lot of employers will consider you for a permanent role with them. I’d say it’s never a bad idea to browse through your prospects.
