Why we are a London Living Wage employer: An interview with Xhulio Sina and Natalie John, owners of the Bottle Bar and Shop in Catford

What motivated you to become a London Living Wage employer?

We've paid the London Living Wage to our employees since we opened Bottle Bar and Shop in December 2017. It's always been very important to us to reward people for their hard work.

Living in London is expensive so it only seems fair to pay the London Living Wage, minimising the gap that often exists between a high cost of living vs little pay. Employees need to feel that they are valued and we sincerely believe in investing in our staff and setting an example in an industry where people are often paid too little for what they do.

Why do you think it’s important?

As a small business who only employs three people, investing in our staff is key! If your employee feels valued and motivated, they will do a good job in return. So it's a win win scenario in the workplace!

We believe that the London Living Wage plays a huge part in making our employees feel valued and feel that they are an integral part of the success of the business.

What advice would you give to other businesses who are thinking about becoming a London Living Wage employer?

Do it! We would definitely recommend the London Living Wage to any employer. It's hugely rewarding for employees, it makes them feel valued and respected. Treating employees fairly and making them feel valued is key to the success of any business! 

And from an employer perspective, it's beneficial too because members of staff are more likely to invest themselves into the business you are running. It's certainly been the case for us. We feel it’s helped cement a relationship of trust within the team.
