Questions and answers about School Street Exemption Permits
When should I apply?
- Please apply at your earliest convenience.
- Your permit must be authorised before you drive through the restricted roads, otherwise you will be liable for a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). Please await confirmation of the outcome of your application first and note the permit approval times specified below.
- You must receive confirmation that the exemption permit has been authorised before driving through the restrictions. Exemption is only valid for the School Street you have applied for, each School Street has an identification number (SS1).
Who is eligible for the School Street Exemption Permit?
- Residents of the qualifying street/s.
- Blue Badge Holding teachers, pupils and parents, carers, and other staff at the school where the restriction is present.
- Carers of residents of the qualifying street/s (approved by resident’s GP that they require physical care due to health/physical conditions).
How can I apply?
- Apply using the Lewisham Council Permit system.
- If you have obtained permits or vouchers using this system before, please log in.
- If you have not previously used the system, please create an account.
- Once you have logged in to the system, select School Street Exemption Permit or click the link above again.
How many permits do I need?
You will need to obtain one permit per vehicle you wish to be exempted from the restriction. If you have two vehicles, you will need to apply for two permits.
What evidence do I need to provide?
Residents will need to provide two pieces of evidence for proof of address, and one piece of evidence for proof of vehicle ownership. Residents who require carers can obtain a second permit for their carer.
Proof of address
- Current Council Tax document showing your address to be on the school street.
- Utility Bill (gas, water or electric) dated within the last 3 months showing your address to be on the school street.
- Tenancy agreement/ Solicitor completion letter showing your address to be on the school street (if the document is dated within the last month)
Proof of vehicle ownership
- Front cover of V5c displaying name of applicant.
- hire / lease agreement: hire / lease documentation must show name of applicant.
Proof of care requirement
- Letter from GP
Blue Badge holders who are: employed by the school, parents, or parents/carers for Blue Badge holding pupils who attend the school will need to provide two pieces of evidence for proof of attendance and one piece of evidence for proof of vehicle ownership.
Proof of attendance
- Photo of the Blue Badge (front and back).
- A letter from the Headteacher confirming that you are a staff member, pupil, parent or carer who requires access to the school.
Proof of vehicle ownership
- Front cover of V5c displaying name of applicant.

How long will my permit take to get approved?
- If you have uploaded all the evidence required, please allow five working days for the permit to be approved.
- If you are asked for more evidence, please upload it as soon as you can so that it can be reviewed.
- If you have not uploaded the evidence required within 30 days, your permit application will be rejected, and you will need to apply again.
Do I need to display anything in my vehicle?
The permit will be an e-permit, so there will not be a physical permit sent to you, and you will not have to display anything in your vehicle.
