Support for people with dementia

Information about services that can support you if you have dementia.

Information, advice and activities

Lewisham MindCare

The Dementia Information and Support Service, run by Lewisham MindCare, works with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust (UHL) and Carers Lewisham to support residents of Lewisham with dementia.

The dementia advisors provide a wide range of support, depending on the situation and what service users are looking for. For example, they can:

  • provide information about dementia and signposting/refer to other services that may be useful

  • look at particular needs and interests

  • help to make use of services in the local community

  • help to plan for the future

  • show what practical help is available

  • offer advocacy support

  • reach out to diverse communities

  • offer group activities and mutual support

  • raise awareness of dementia and run training

Referrals

Referrals are accepted through self-referral, GP-referral, Memory Service referral and from other voluntary organisations.

Lewisham MindCare will get back to you within 3 days to offer an appointment. For most people this appointment will be used to find out about the service user’s situation and how they think the service could help them.

MindCare will then work with service users to put together a plan specific to them and what they want, and provide them with the help they need to put it into practice.

Staff is available for appointments 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday, including Tuesday evenings.

Sydenham Garden Sow and Grow

Sydenham Garden was set up with the main purpose of helping those in our local community coping with or recovering from significant illness.

Gardener Patients are referred to the project through their GP or key worker and when at the project are known as "co-workers"; working alongside centre staff and other volunteers.

Sow & Grow is a course that runs on weekly basis and lasts for six months. It aims to support people to cope with early stages dementia, using gardening, cooking and craft activities, as well as providing plenty of opportunities for reminiscence, social interaction, reflection and discussion.
