Educational support for children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
About ASD
ASD is a lifelong developmental disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them.
People with this disorder can often have accompanying learning disabilities but everyone with the condition shares a difficulty in making sense of the world. There is also a condition called Asperger syndrome, which is a form of autism usually used to describe people on the higher functioning end of the spectrum.
Educational support for children in the borough with a diagnosis of ASD is provided by Drumbeat Outreach.
What educational support is available
Drumbeat Outreach is a team within Drumbeat School and ASD service.
They work with children in the borough with a diagnosis of ASD or children with communication and interaction difficulties who are likely to receive a diagnosis.
The team consists of eight teachers and specialist advisers offering support, advice and training to professionals, children and their families.
Drumbeat Outreach works across all mainstream educational settings, including early years settings, primary and secondary schools, free schools and academies.
They also provide training to both parents and carers and professionals with two rolling programs of monthly workshops and three post diagnostic parent courses.
