Handknitting - complete beginners to improvers

This 5- week course will either teach you how to knit from the basic first steps, and to work on your first project or it will allow you to develop your existing knitting skills. You will be encouraged to work with a range of materials and to have fun being creative in a supportive group. Topics will include stitch patterns, experimenting with colour work (that may include fair isle knitting & intarsia), circular knitting and knitting lace, equipment use, pattern reading, individual project work and professional finishing. Learners with greater experience will be encouraged to work on a more complex personal project- and this could include making a pair of socks or a shawl, as examples.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is suitable for learners of all abilities- from complete beginners to those with more advanced skills.

Learning Goals:
To learn a range of knitting stitches and techniques. To develop pattern reading skills. To use & experiment with specialist equipment. Plan and work on a small starter project or develop a more complex project, as appropriate.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Homework is encouraged- extra work is not essential, but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Beginners will need to bring along a pair of knitting needles and any yarn that you have at home which you might like to use. We do have some small quantities of yarn and some needles that you can practice with in class, but if you do want to buy your own for the first session, we recommend a ball of Aran weight yarn in a light colour & a pair of 5mm needles. More experienced knitters will potentially need to provide a small selection of needles and yarns of your choice, plus any patterns or project ideas that you are considering working on. A notebook and pen, and an A4 wallet or small bag would be useful to keep your work in, and a phone/camera would be useful for recording ideas and techniques. If you already have some knitting on the go, bring that along too!

What do I need to bring to the first class?
As above, and the tutor will discuss materials and personal course projects during the first session.
