Learn to use a sewing machine confidently

Do you want to be able to use a sewing machine confidently? If so, this very short course is designed as a basic introduction for learners who may be interested in progressing onto any other Fashion & Textiles course- or who just want to be able to carry out basic sewing tasks at home- and want to build their confidence in using a sewing machine first. You will gain a good understanding of using a machine safely, and you will be introduced to all the main functions and controls, from correct threading and tension adjustments, to a range of stitches & simple techniques.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is only suitable for complete beginners & no prior knowledge or experience is needed.

Learning Goals:
To gain a general understanding of the functions of the sewing machine. To use a domestic machine correctly and safely. To complete a small range of stitch samples. To be confident to use a machine independently.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential but will enable learners to practice and reinforce the techniques learned on the course.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
All the basic materials you will use are covered in the course fee.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
A notebook & pen and you may also wish to bring your phone or camera for recording ideas and techniques.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels, and a small number of which are delivered online . Information about additional or progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the current ALL programme on our website. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community & Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople.

Additional information
Please note that it is not possible to bring your own sewing machine- these are provided at the centre. The course fee includes a small charge for basic course sampling materials & sundries, and maintenance of tools & equipment.
