Make a beat - music technology

This is an 11 week course which uses Reason 8 to compose music electronically. It is part of a discrete curriculum for Adults with Learning Difficulties. Learners should have an interest in making their own music. The course is a learning journey over three terms during which you should make progress with your skills to use the computer software. By term three you should have produced a short piece or some pieces of music which can be burnt onto a CD. You will be supported to design and print a cover for your CD.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is part of a discrete curriculum for AWLD. To enrol on the course you need to be confident to use a computer and navigate between windows and save files.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To identify a favourite sound and the instrument. To identify 2 main differences between 2 genres of music. To make a recording of a piece of sound or voice. To record your progress throughout the course.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Learners should buy their own USB memory stick to save their work and take with them at the end of term.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Pen, A4 folder and paper.

There are a variety of different courses available in the supported learning department. Information about these courses are available through the tutor and curriculum leader.
