Drumming workshop

This 11 week course in the Supported Learning Curriculum for Adults with Learning Difficulties is for learners who enjoy music and making music using drumming instruments. . This creative approach falls under our social skills and health pathways, as creativity can ease mental health challenges while producing something unique and meaningful which can be shared with community through our celebrations and events. This is a music course which involves playing musical instruments, in particular the ones from percussion family. This course enables expression through music while requires learners to participate in group and individual music making. Learners explore different rhythms, practise co-ordination, and turn taking as well as learn to follow instructions. It is believed that making music can positively impact mood and this course can help learners to relax and communicate through sounds.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
Learners need to have an interest in music and be able to concentrate throughout the class and have good manual dexterity in order to use musical instruments.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To follow the instructions of a conductor and change with the rhythm and start and stop on command. To participate in group and individual music making on weekly basis. To explore self-expression through music and play a short solo performance on the drums at least once in the term. To achieve a personal goal associated with the subject.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Please bring an A4 plastic folder in order to keep any handouts.

There are a variety of different courses available in the supported learning department. Information about these courses are available through the tutor and curriculum leader.
