Beginner maths and English with IT

This 11-week course is for adults with learning difficulties and supports development of life skills. You will improve your confidence in reading and writing English. You will learn how to express your opinions and develop new vocabulary by reading in a group. You will also explore using numbers and maths in your everyday life. You will practise counting and sequencing numbers, reading the time and using online learning resources to help you to develop additional skills such as keyboard and mouse skills, navigating a website and printing out your completed work. Developing or improving these skills will increase your sense of independence and prepare you for future employability.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
To enrol on the course you need to be able to work in a group, not be too shy and have a willingness to help each other.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To read and write upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet and improve word recognition To read and decode meaning from whole words and simple sentences To read the time on an analogue and digital clock, including phrases such as quarter to and past, half past, five to, etc. N/A

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need pens and an A4 folder to keep completed class work and handouts in.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Learners must bring their folder with them to the class every week. This will enable any learning gaps to be addressed and will minimise disruption in the journey of learning.

Options when finished
There are a variety of different courses available in the Supported Learning department. Information about these courses are available by speaking to the tutor and curriculum leader.

We expect a commitment to attend well. This is beneficial to making progress. If you have problems in class with your work or with other learners please speak to your tutor or contact the curriculum leader.
