Communication - developing skills for confidence

There will be group discussions and debate using positive assertion techniques where you will practise listening to someone else's viewpoint and speaking up for yourself. This is a 35 week course in the Supported Learning Curriculum for Adults with Learning Difficulties. You will to learn and develop literacy and numeracy skills and to produce a record of your course experiences in a folder. You will be given opportunities to research topics using computers and the internet. You will learn to access local services/ facilities as well as to deal with a range of situations when assertive techniques are useful such as medical appointments, interviews, shopping and making choices about housing, holidays and outings. To be able to speak up for yourself with confidence. To develop spoken and written communication skills and learn methods for finding information. To develop the confidence to make choices in your everyday life. To access information on the internet.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
Basic spoken English, ability to recognise numbers and letters, copy text, ability to pick out different patterns in text. Commitment to attend every week.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To be able to prepare information to support a discussion where you need to assert yourself with confidence. To develop spoken & written communication skills & understand how to format information appropriately. To develop the confidence to make choices in your everyday life. To complete forms on paper and on line. To record learning and experience in personal course folder.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Learners are required to provide a folder for their course work, a pen and some paper.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
A4 folder, plastic wallets, pens and paper.

Options when finished
This course should give you confidence to tackle other Supported Learning courses or continue with your confidence building on ' Friends and Relationships'.

We expect a commitment to attend well. This is beneficial to making progress. If you have problems in class with your work or with other learners please speak to your tutor or contact the curriculum leader.
